Why Pune is Perfect for Self-Drive Weekends
Pune sits at the edge of the Sahyadri mountains with beaches to the west, hill stations to the south, and forts everywhere. Most destinations are under 200 km — perfect for a quick Friday-evening departure.
1. Mahabaleshwar & Panchgani — 120 km, 2.5 hours
The twin hill stations offer strawberry farms, valley views, table land, and Mapro Garden. Drive through the scenic Wai Ghat. Best in monsoon when waterfalls are at full force.
2. Alibaug — 145 km, 3 hours
Clean beaches, Kolaba Fort, and fresh seafood. The drive via Tamhini Ghat during monsoon is jaw-droppingly beautiful — waterfalls literally falling on the road.
3. Kolad — 130 km, 2.5 hours
White water rafting on the Kundalika River. Kolad is Pune's adventure capital. Go rafting during monsoon (July-September) for the best rapids. The drive through Mangaon is smooth.
4. Bhimashankar — 110 km, 3 hours
One of the 12 Jyotirlingas, set in a dense forest reserve. The drive includes some beautiful ghat sections. You might spot the Indian Giant Squirrel (Shekru) in the forest.
5. Lavasa — 57 km, 1.5 hours
Italy-inspired lakeside town. Though development has slowed, the drive itself through the hills is stunning. Great for a half-day trip.
6. Lonavala & Khandala — 65 km, 1.5 hours
The closest escape. Rajmachi Fort, Bushi Dam, Tiger Point, and chikki shops. Go on a weekday to avoid crowds.
7. Tapola — 150 km, 4 hours
Called the "Mini Kashmir" of Maharashtra. Shivsagar Lake, boating, and untouched nature. Very few tourists, maximum peace. The road gets rough in the last 20 km — take an SUV.
8. Ganpatipule — 330 km, 6 hours
Beautiful beach town with the famous Ganpati temple on the shore. The Konkan drive from Pune is scenic but long — best for a 2-night weekend.
9. Malshej Ghat — 130 km, 3 hours
Flamingos during monsoon, waterfalls, and misty mountain views. The ghat drive is thrilling. One of the most underrated monsoon destinations near Pune.
10. Kamshet — 45 km, 1 hour
India's paragliding capital. Even if you don't fly, the drive through the hills is beautiful and there are great camping options by the lake.
11. Satara — 115 km, 2 hours
Kaas Plateau (Valley of Flowers — UNESCO site), Thoseghar Waterfall, and Sajjangad Fort. Best visited August-September when the plateau is in full bloom.
12. Raigad Fort — 135 km, 3.5 hours
The capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's empire. Take the ropeway up and explore the fort ruins. The drive through the Sahyadri foothills is fantastic.
